India is a key focus of ANZSOG’s international engagement. Since 2013 ANZSOG has worked in partnership with the Government of India’s Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to deliver executive development and leadership programs to senior Indian public servants.
The core program in our partnership with the Government of India is the India Advanced Leadership Program (IALP), which has been delivered to five cohorts of Indian officials since its launch four years ago. With the strong support of the Victorian and New South Wales governments, IALP provides Secretary, Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary level officers from India with a unique opportunity to interact with some of the most senior public policy practitioners and academics from Australia and New Zealand.
Building on our existing partnership with DoPT, ANZSOG’s engagement with India recently expanded with the delivery last month of a new, bespoke program built around the theme of Managing Complexity. Delivered in Melbourne 20-24 March, 25 mid-career Indian public servants undertook the program, which had a particular focus on policy development, implementation and improvement in traditionally difficult areas of public policy.
Significantly, the success and growth of ANZSOG’s India programs has benefits which reach beyond that of executive education. There are now over 140 ANZSOG alumni in senior positions within India’s civil service. For many of these individuals, their ANZSOG program was their first experience of Australia and New Zealand, introducing them to our cities, our cultures and our hospitality. As such, our programs compliment the efforts of our member governments to establish goodwill and people to people links in the region in support of their wider soft diplomacy objectives.
To further this end, ANZSOG is currently working on the design of an outbound India program for senior Australian and New Zealand public servants that will provide them with the opportunity to visit India to engage with, and learn from, their Indian counterparts. As has been the experience of ANZSOG’s outbound China program (the China Reciprocal Program), two way exchange opportunities lead to deeper learnings and improved bi-lateral understanding.
