Leading people through disruption series

Our public services are dealing with a period of almost unprecedented change and disruption, which is testing the skills of leaders and reinforcing the value of inclusive, supportive models of leadership.

ANZSOG Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) faculty member Dr Jo Cribb is one of the youngest people ever appointed as a chief executive in the New Zealand public service. She has focused on some of the most difficult social issues of our time including child abuse, child poverty, family violence, and vulnerable women.

In a series of three webinars, experienced Chief Executive, board director, strategist, gender and policy expert, Jo Cribb will show you practical, research-based strategies to adjust your leadership style and support staff in the ‘new normal’. She will also demonstrate the value of being an inclusive leader and building an inclusive culture. You will learn how to maintain inclusive leadership under pressure as well as how best to lead during a crisis.

Our public services are in a period of what is likely to be continued, sustained and precedented change. Leaders must shift to more inclusive ways of leading that build resilient teams that can adapt to these changes.

People will have a range of responses to the current disruption, but most will experience some kind of fear of change and for their futures. Good leaders will work to support staff and prepare them for change.

This webinar will include a Q&A session with the audience, a range of practical examples from Dr Cribb and other leaders, including Gill Callister PSM (former Victorian Government Secretary and current CEO of MIND) and Liz Macpherson (the first woman Government Statistician in New Zealand and current Assistant Commissioner in the Office of the Privacy Commissioner/Te Mana Mātāpono Matatapu, New Zealand Government). The webinar will also include practical exercises to help you understand what you need to do to change your leadership style.

Good leaders strive to create inclusive and diverse teams, where people can perform to the best of their abilities. But everyone has unconscious biases and behaviours that can exclude others. When you are under pressure, you can easily take short cuts and revert to learnt behaviours that can undermine the positive culture you aspire to create.

This webinar will provide a refresher on unconscious bias and its impact on your leadership behaviours. It will also provide practical tips to ensure you remain an inclusive leader under pressure.

It will include a Q&A session with the audience, a range of insights from research and the practical experience of Dr Cribb and other leaders, including Michelle Hippolite (Deputy Director-General, Te Papa Atawhai (Department of Conservation, New Zealand Government)) and Trish Bergin (Co-Director, Governance of the 50/50 by 2030 Foundation). The webinar will also cover strategies for reducing bias and checking your own leadership behaviour.

In times of crisis and uncertainty, leaders need to make important decisions quickly and with limited information. How can they ensure that they do so while maintaining and building an inclusive culture and decision-making process for their team?

This webinar will show you practical, research-based strategies to adjust your leadership style and support your staff in the ‘new normal’.
