Evaluation for the public sector

Professor Rogers will help you understand the conceptual and practical issues involved in evaluating public sector policies and programs, and evaluation’s role as a key tool for decision-makers.

“Governments now require greater scrutiny and assessment of public sector programs to determine whether they’re working,” Professor Rogers says. “Evaluation is integral to decision-making – not an afterthought.”

Key benefits

Robust and timely evaluations can be challenging to get right.

You will learn to focus evaluation studies according to specific criteria such as purpose and stakeholder needs. You will understand how to apply program logic, how to set standards for evaluations to then assess the quality of evaluation reports.

Evaluation for the public sector will be valuable for people in policy, program and service delivery roles who plan and conduct evaluations, assess the quality of evaluation reports, and manage others who conduct evaluation studies.

Previous participants have described this as an excellent course with a good balance of academic rigour and practical ‘how-to’ for the work environment.

I had been waiting a year to attend this workshop - it was worth the wait! I came away with useful, practical information and ideas that I can apply to my own work.

Course details

Over two days, Professor Rogers will guide you through interactive discussion using real-world public sector examples, including material from contemporary local situations.

I found the course really good. Discussed plenty of techniques and tools that could be used in the workplace. Presenters were excellent and worked very well together over the course of the two days. It was clear the presenters were very much experts in the evaluation space. They provided plenty of working examples based on their experience.

Evaluation for the public sector will teach you about:

  • evaluation’s role in decision-making
  • applying program logic
  • gathering evidence in an evaluation and assessing validity
  • working with consultants
  • managing an evaluation.
