‘Smart City’ is the phrase on everyone’s lips, as the globe faces the apparently irresistible rise of huge cities as economic powerhouses. Urbanisation has positively transformed the lives of billions, but the accompanying consumption of massive resources has both socio-economic and environmental impacts which challenge governments and citizens across multiple and complex dimensions.
It’s common to look for technology-led solutions to urban ills with ubiquitous gadgets, sensors and Big Data. But can we also think about ‘smart cities’ in more imaginative, inclusive, sustainable as well as more innovative ways? What can Auckland learn from our eminent visitor and his team’s approach to the future of smart cities around the world?
