Media and Government Series of Events

This recent series of events was an ANZSOG initiative that sought to examine the unique and dynamic relationship shared by media and government, bringing together world-class international and local practitioners.

Strategic Media Management workshop

The first of these events - a one-day workshop, lead by respected educator, broadcaster and author, Peter Thompson - enabled participants to examine the culture and ethos of the media, and explore strategies for proactively managing media issues in a government context. A highlight of the day was the informative and challenging leader’s panel, involving former NSW Premier Bob Carr, political scientist and author Thomas Mann, Financial Times contributing Editor, John Lloyd, and Tom Bentley, former Director of the UK ‘think-tank’ Demos.

Media and Government: a Changing Relationship in Uncertain Times

John Lloyd and EJ Dionne, two of the world’s leading commentators, on the uneasy relationship between media and government gave stimulating presentations at the series’ special dinner event. The evening was facilitated by The Australian’s Editor-at-large, Paul Kelly, and guests were also entertained with a response by the Hon. Tony Abbott, Federal Minister for Health and Ageing.

Media and Government Roundtable

The final event of the series, a roundtable style seminar, was successful in providing an opportunity for those present to debate the various facets of the unique relationship shared by media and government. In addition to the insights gained on the day, a number of significant propositions for future activities were put forward.
