Profile

Assoc Prof O'Neill is the Executive Academic Director for ANZSOG's China-Advanced Leadership Program. Deirdre O'Neill is an Associate Professor in Public Sector Management at Monash University, Australia’s largest university, where she is the Director of Education  in the Department of Management. She was the Academic Director of the Executive Master of Public Administration program at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government from 2004 to 2010. While at ANZSOG she also designed and delivered, as Academic Director, the Pacific Executive (PACE) Program, a major public sector capacity building program for the Pacific delivered by ANZSOG in partnership with AusAID. Prior to her academic career, she worked extensively in the Victorian public sector.

Associate Professor O’Neill’s current research focus includes public sector workforce planning and development. She is currently leading a funded research project exploring performance reporting across government in Australia, and in particular the use of performance reporting by community organisations.

Associate Professor O’Neill is a board member of the Australian Journal of Public Administration. She has numerous publications in her field, including an edited book (The Contract State: Public management and the Kennett Government, 1994) book chapters and articles in Australian and international journals. She is the co-author (with Owen Hughes) of Business, Government and Globalization, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2008. Her PhD (Monash University 2000) researched the challenge of administrative reform in government.
