The ANZSOG COAG Workshops series explores COAG-related subjects from different perspectives and with a broad range of senior stakeholders. The workshops perform a useful complementary role to the working group round of discussions and the main COAG meetings. The workshops share knowledge and perspectives and take a longer-term view of policy challenges.

Throughout 2008 ANZSOG organised and facilitated three workshops with a focus on school education. These workshops and their participants examined and encouraged debate on the themes of:

• Improving teacher quality and low socio-economic status schools; 
• Undertaking systemic reform in school systems; and
• Transparency and accountability in assessing school performance.

A fourth workshop focused on early childhood development is currently being planned for delivery in the first half of 2009.

It is ANZSOG’s belief that these events have contributed to and enhanced the COAG process. The series has been developed in conjunction with the Victorian Government and with the assistance of a steering committee drawn from across the ANZSOG network. The Victorian Government generously provided base funding to support the series.
