Alumni News
Alumni events throughout Australia and New Zealand are keeping the ANZSOG Alumni community busy. A variety of opportunities are available for Alumni to engage with colleagues in their jurisdiction. The format of the events allow for informal discussion with a host of high profile speakers and the valuable opportunity to build and maintain networks.
The Victorian Alumni Association has delivered two events this year, with the most recent featuring Fran Thorn, former Secretary of the Department of Health. Fran spoke on Leading Through Transition of Government. The next event for Victorian Alumni is in mid-June with Ken Lay, Chief Commissioner, Victoria Police.
Earlier this month, Robin Ryde, Director, Executive Fellows Program (EFP), reconnected with the 2011 Cohort to facilitate the EFP 2011 Cohort Refresher – Re-Connecting, Reflecting and Learning: Leadership when the going gets tough. Robin also presented to the New Zealand Alumni Chapter on the topic: Leadership challenges: an International perspective. The New Zealand Chapter has already delivered two events in their jurisdiction since its inception in early 2012.
Queensland Alumni recently met with Professor Peter Jordan, Professor of Organisational Behaviour and the Deputy Director of the Work Organisation and Wellbeing Research Centre at the Griffith Business School, Griffith University. Professor Jordan is an expert in emotional intelligence, emotions in organisations, team performance and toxic emotions in organisations. The topic of his session was Emotions and Workplace Performance in Times of Change.
In mid-May we welcome back Professor Malcolm Sparrow, Professor of the Practice of Public Management, Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Faculty Chair of the Executive Program on Strategic Management of Regulatory and Enforcement Agencies. Professor Sparrow will deliver three Executive Workshops during his visit as well as presenting on Catastrophic Risks and other wicked problems for New South Wales based Alumni.
Professor John Alford, Professor of Public Sector Management at ANZSOG and EMPA Subject Leader of Delivering Public Value, will visit the Northern Territory in July to meet with Alumni based there. John will soon be releasing the book Rethinking Public Service Delivery and is author of Engaging Public Sector Clients, which won the SPAR Best Book Prize from the American Society for Public Administration in 2011.

Alumni News
The Alumni program successfully delivered a series of Alumni engagement events for incoming EMPA students at the start of the year.
Events were held in most jurisdictions in both Australia and New Zealand and as far wide as the Northern Territory and Western Australia. In 2013 we aim to again connect Alumni with incoming students in as many jurisdictions as possible - with plans to cross Bass Strait when we reach a critical mass of over ten alumni in Tasmania!
Student comments included:
"It is comforting to hear from people who have managed the juggling of work, study and, in my case and others, a partner who also works and young children. Hearing their tips on achieving this was helpful. Also, just the way they spoke about the course and the learning they took from it clearly indicated it had been of great value to them"
"It was a good opportunity to ask people who have actually been through it what it was 'really' like"
"An enjoyable and useful evening. It was especially nice to meet (some of) our cohort in a more work-orientated environment"
"It was a good opportunity to see a few of the people from the group and to hear from the panellists. A key anxiety I had about my participation was resolved"
