Strategic budgeting – NEW workshop
Senior managers in the public sector regularly face budget cuts, driven by fiscal crisis, policy change or organisational or policy decline. Managers therefore need to understand the choices that are available to them and the short and longer term implications of those choices.
The workshop Strategic Budgeting in Times of Restraint, to be held from 26-28 March 2012 at the University of New South Wales AGSM CBD Campus in Sydney, aims to help senior managers respond to the pressure for ongoing cutbacks and restraint in strategic, well-informed ways that sustain the capacity of their organisations.
Participants will learn how to manage the conflict inherent in cutting back budgets, without allowing politics to undermine their ability to make these cuts strategically. They will also learn how to develop proposals for embedding strategic budgeting in their organisations.
The workshop will be led by Assoc Prof Joanne Kelly, Director of ANZSOG (NSW) based at the University of Sydney and Prof Paul Posner, Director of the Public Administration Program at George Mason University, Washington DC.
Policy Skills
The highly successful four-day workshop Policy Skills Program has been renamed Policy and Program Skills. This small change aside, the workshop will continue to offer benefits to anyone wishing to refine or boost skills in this area.
‘The course has been extremely valuable for my development – I feel as though I’ve learned more about government and how to create effective policy than I have during the past two years of practical experience.’ - workshop participant.
The workshop will next be held in two parts, on 5-6 and 19-20 March 2012, at the Melbourne Business School. Presenters will include John Alford, ANZSOG Professor of Public Sector Management and George Argyrous, Senior Lecturer in Evidence Based Decision-Making, ANZSOG/UNSW.
