Supporting Decision Making: Building Queensland's Policy Backroom
Queensland's public sector faces myriad policy challenges as it heads into the new decade. Not only will it have to address the wicked problem of balancing economic and population growth with liveability and sustainability within an environment of fiscal constraint, but it will also have to confront the complexities of negotiating and implementing the ambitious COAG reform agenda, including the outcomes of the Henry tax review. What policy skills will we need to support the decision making processes which are essential if Queensland is to successfully negotiate these challenges while continuing to deliver the services that citizens expect? How will Queensland public servants meet their obligation to ensure decision-makers receive high quality, innovative and responsive advice and options about policy and service delivery?
The Department of the Premier and Cabinet’s outgoing Associate Director-General, Policy and Intergovernmental Relations, Dr Pradeep Philip and the new appointee, Paul Low, will reflect on the challenges ahead for Queensland and the skills and capabilities needed to confront them.
